FINALLY I went to Dim Sum in Montréal with a bunch of friends from work. I can't believe it took so long. I've been here for 18 years!! My friend Laurent chose the spot, a place called Kam Fung that he and his bride-to-be love. It was awesome. We all went into a feeding frenzy as soon as we sat down.
We picked plates after plates and it all came down to $18 a head, tip included. Delicious AND cheap!
I don't know the real name of every dish for sure, so I'm just going to quickly describe all the tasty bits we ate. Tea Shrimp "sheet" dumpling Pork and shrimp "crepe" dumplings Crab ball Spare rib, fried shrimps and green veggies Fried shrimp dumpling with mayonnaise-type sauce Peanut and pork dumpling Sweet crispy dough Fried fish Sesame balls with red bean paste Fried chicken rolls After dim sum, I went to the movies to see Inception and had a large, overprized soda - $5.24 Dinner was a cheese sandwich and a cupcake Money spent on food today: $23.24
My friend Céline and I had a nice day together. I took her out to brunch and then we went to the market to buy a few things for a Lemon Curd cooking clinic we had planned. Brunch at Baguette et Bagatelle for two - $30.54
The eggs were overcooked again and they hide the jam under the milk, so my first two toasts went "unjammed". Plus, there's no AC inside. I won't go back.
Food from Marché Maisonneuve - $27 I had a few of Céline's strawberries
Céline is a commercial producer, but she also has her own "designer cake" business. She is working on a wedding cake right now, so she brought me a half-dozen cupcakes she had baked for a tasting. Of course, we had a few bites as we cooked. Dinner was corn on the cob and a Campari and soda
You know you've had too much corn on the cob when you need to take a shower after your meal.
I also had a few neighbours over to share the lemon curd wealth. Money spent on food today: $57.54
Cheese toast and soda Banana from the bistro - free Soda - $1.25
For lunch, I went to Otto, W Montreal's restaurant. I won a gift certificate for two, so I invited my friend Caro. It was good and the terrasse was nice. Olive bread Fried shrimp roll with mango Sauvignon Blanc Pork chop with veggies Almond ice-cream cookie Chocolate-covered almonds and banana chips from the bistro (free, did not eat all of that) At work, it was Beer Friday! (free) I was not very hungry for dinner and had cheese curd, toast and lemonade Money spent on food today: $1.25
Cheese sandwich, soda from Pasta Café - $3.75 Spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, lemon pound cake from the bistro - $6 Soda - $1.25 Turkey patties with tzatziki, oven-baked sweet potato fries I also had a grocery delivery - $185
From August 24th, 2009 to August 24th 2010, I photographed everything I ate and made notes of the cost.
This included all the food and drink costs for the year.
And yes, I counted booze.
Grand total: $10 295.92
What is this blog about?
This is not a food blog.
Well, it kind of is. But mainly, it’s about the amount of money I use to feed myself, day after day. Why? Because I just don’t know. I (almost) never check prices when I buy food. I love to cook and I can easily feed six guests for less than 30 bucks (wine is extra, people), but I also spend ungodly amounts of money on grocery, then throw away a fifth of it. It has never been so easy to buy good food, but it often comes at a price. And it is even easier to buy cheap, unhealthy junk food that has an undeniable cost on our health. Where does my food budget go? How do the choices I make impact my budget, my health and the health of the planet?
