Food log: Wednesday, September 16

I finally had some time to cook today and made a fantastic soup I will tell you more about later. Soups are great! With all the fall veggies, now is the time to make big batches of soup and freeze it all for lunches or easy weekday dinners. They go great with biscuits, a salad or grilled cheese sandwich.

OK, let's talk about what I ate today.

Toast and grapefruit juice from home

This was eaten at 1am. Late night snack or very, very early breakfast? YOU decide!

I'm trying to ween myself from poison Diet Coke. Tea helps.

These are pretty cute. They represent the walk/don't walk signs you find on street corners in Germany. Tasty, too.

I was somebody's "Buddy" at work today. That means I had the task to welcome a new employee and help make her few first days go smoothly. As a thank you, Sid Lee gives out two free bistro tickets to encourage us to have a meal with our new buddy. Fun! Thanks Sid Lee! And lucky me, today was couscous day. It's one of the best meals our chefs make and it is hotter than hell.

This is what the bistro tickets look like:

Ok, Ok, Ok, so I had ONE Diet Coke. Big deal! Leave me alone! Baaaaaaah!

Biscuit from the bistro
Biscuit from the bistro
We just launched a new site for Philadelphia Cheese and these one-bowl biscuits are one of the recipes you can learn how to prepare there. So the bistro chefs decided to make a batch and we got to try them. They are very good! There was a pile of leftovers, so I brought some home to try with my soup tomorrow. The biscuits were also delicious with the last of my mousse. This is pretty much proof that bringing back work at home can be fun! Heh.

Dinner was panko-crusted lemon chicken with spinach

Handful of Reese Chipits

These are delicious. I bought them to make cookies. I should not have open the bag as now I am doomed to eat the whole thing within the week. Maybe I should freeze it.

Homemade cream of celery soup with bacon

Yes, I ate soup after dessert. I made a big batch and could not resist having a bowl. It is so yummy - and easy to prepare. The bacon gives it a nice salty kick. The recipe can be found on Apartment Therapy's food and cooking zone.

Do you know ONE persone who doesn't like deviled eggs? Because I sure don't. They are little buckets of flavor.

Cheese and veggie cocktail from home

My favorite afternoon snack: cheese and veggie cocktail
A.K.A. my favorite snack.

After work, I headed to my friend Josianne, one of my best friends. She just gave birth to her little bundle of joy and invited me over for "dinner and a baby !" Of course, she spent most of the evening feeding her son. Kids!

Movie meals: the prison scene from Goodfellas

Ask foodies about their favorite cooking scene in a movie and this one is probably going to come up. The film itself is genius, but the part where Paul Sorvino slices the garlic with a razor blace has become a pure classic. The whole scene makes my mouth water. Every time I see it, I just want to open a bottle of wine and dig into some tomato sauce with a piece of bread!

If you want to get the DVD, I set up an Amazon link on the right side of this blog. I'll be talking about the other titles in future weeks. They all have great cooking and eating scenes!

Food log: Sunday, September 13

Today was grocery day. Note to self: don't order a delivery on the same day as the Montreal Marathon. Because all the streets will be closed and you will get your food late. Lesson learned!

I did the groceries - $106 with tip and delivery

Breakfast was eggs and waffles with half a glass of milk.

Since I had to wait for the delivery anyway, I didn't mind staying in and cleaning the loft. I spent the day organizing my walk-in closets (I got my freezer!) and scanned some recipes and images I had pulled from magazines.

Here is the freezer, covered in my favorite Russian propaganda posters.
My new freezer!

It can hold a lot of stuff, has a nifty drawer and a "soft freeze zone" I'm not too clear on.

Then it was time for lunch.

Snack time was cheese and veggie cocktail

Then a glass of grapefruit juice

And dinner: pulled pork and a salad

I'm still peckish. The cookie jar is winking at me and I might just wink back.

Edited to add: I just did a bit of research, and the Soft Freeze Zone of my new Frigidaire is meant to keep ice cream in. It's 9 to 11 degrees warmer than the rest of the freezer, so the frozen treats are not rock-solid and full of ice crystals.
