OMG it's a sale!

This weekend, the Bay has a pretty sweet kitchen sale going on, with 50% off full pots and pans sets, including Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsey and Curtis Stone brands, 15% on all small kitchen appliances and 25% on individual pots and skillets.
I bought myself a new kicky rice cooker to replace my old one, who died on me a few weeks ago in a chop-suey related snafu.
Food log: Friday, September 4
This has been a yellow day. That can't be healthy. Mom, please look away.
English muffins, chemical cheese spread, OJ - from groceries

Diet Coke from the machine in the morning - $1.25 (no pic)
Popcorn at La cage aux sports - free

About 30 of us went to a sports bar for lunch to cheer a few departing coworkers.
We had...
Beer

Beef sliders

Greasy Fried Food Platter of Doom

And a little more beer

I split the bill with Ellen so it came to $22.33 including tip
I showed my yellow food pics to pal Monique from work and she said "Well, at least we know what colour it would look like if you vomited on the way home." I can always count of Monique to bring peace to my day with a bit of poetry.
Diet Coke from the vending machine - $1.25

The yellow theme continued even at dinner...
Glass of La Sablette Muscadet (or two) - $14.75

Corn on the cob with butter and truffle oil - from grocery

This is an either/or scenario. PLEASE don't eat corn on the cob with both butter and truffle oil, unless you are looking to get a triple bypass by the time you are 40.
Money spent on food today: $39.58

Food log: Thursday, September 3
OJ and egg sandwich from a metro convenience store - $7.10

Highway robbery!
Spicy chicken, veggies, fruits with chocolate sauce, lemonade from the bistro - $6

This was so good! I gave some of my crispy chicken skin to a friend and he said that if I had given him more, he would have left his wife for me. Being respectful of the institution of marriage, I had to stop this nonsense right away and eat the rest of it myself.
Banana from the bistro - free

Chocolate-covered banana chips - free

Another amazing snack shared by Ellen
San Pellegrino from Pasta Café - $1.65

Chips from a metro convenience store - $1.50

Dig those groovy floor tiles, brother.
Pol Roger champagne - $64.25

I had a little something to celebrate. Life is good.
Ghetto canapés - from groceries

Heirloom tomato bruschettas, with garlic and basil - from groceries

Peach pie, made from scratch - from groceries

I also got my IGA delivery. Total cost with tip: $145

I failed to mention another cool thing about IGA: free stuff! You get a free item with every $70 you spend (I think) This week's goodies: grapes!
Money spent on food today: $225.5
Woah.

Cereals and OJ, again - groceries

The cat enjoyed the leftover milk when I was done.
Tea (they filled the drawer!) and clementines from the bistro - free

Lentil soup, salami panini, salad and berry mousse from the bistro - $6
Lemon square - from groceries

OK, I lied. We had some still at my desk. I also had a Diet Coke ($1.25)
A few corn chips - from groceries

Baked salmon, green beans and beet salad - groceries

They say the secret to health is a colourful plate! Epic win here, obviously.
I also made a peach pie from scratch, but I didn't have a piece, opting for the cinnamon-raisin rolls I made with the leftover dough instead.

Money spent on food today: $7.25

Jam session: what to do with yummy hostess gifts

My friends are very generous and never come over to dinner empty-handed. That sometimes leads to an overflow of fancy foodie gifts. (Unless it's wine. Wine dissapears very quickly, for some reason.) Currently, my fridge is filled with 5 unopened jars of various jams and fruit butters. I don't often eat sweet things in the morning, so they sit there, unopened. My solution is to make jam sablés called "Bâtonnets suédois" (Sweedish sticks), an old recipe from my childhood. The stains on the pages should be proof enough that I've made that recipe time and time again!

I usualy make this treat with strawberry jam, but this time I used some lemon marmalade a neighbour gave me as a housearming gift. It came out great!

I bet even Carol Channing could not resist!
